Graffiti on Every Wall

Discover It: Romans loved writing on walls, and ancient cities were covered in graffiti scratched or painted onto stone and plaster. People wrote love messages, insults about neighbors, advertisements for gladiator shows, and even election campaign slogans. In Pompeii alone, archaeologists have found over 11,000 pieces of wall writing preserved under volcanic ash. Some of it is funny, rude, or surprisingly similar to things people post online today.

Explorer's Note: One piece of Roman graffiti found in Pompeii says, 'Gaius Pumidius Dipilus was here' — it is like a 2,000-year-old 'I was here' note!

Try This: Write your own Roman-style wall message on a piece of paper — try an advertisement for an imaginary gladiator show or a vote for your favorite person at school.
