Colorful Clues: What's Under the Ground?

How It Works: Before digging begins, workers must find out what is already hidden underground. Pipes and cables run under almost every street, and hitting one could be very dangerous. In the United States, builders call 811 before they dig, and locators come to spray colored paint and place little flags right above the buried lines. Each color has a meaning: red is for electric power, yellow is for gas, blue is for drinking water, and green is for sewers.

Builder's Bonus: Orange marks show phone and internet cables, and white marks show where the builders plan to dig. The colors are a secret code that every builder learns!

Try It Out: Next time you walk along a sidewalk, look for spray-painted marks or tiny flags on the ground. Can you use the color code to guess what is hiding underneath?
